Libby Black: Jasper’s Vans, Courtesy of the Underline Gallery
If you are in New York City this evening, you can spend Fashion’s Night Out rubbing shoulders with Oscar de la Renta at Saks, guzzling cocktails with Rachel Zoe at Piperlime Boutique, or hoping to catch a glimpse of special DJ Solange Knowles at Diane von Furstenberg’s Meatpacking store.
Or you can go to Underline Gallery, on a particularly unfashionable stretch of 14th street, for the opening of “Shop,” its second yearly exhibition responding to Fashion’s Night Out. Curated by Pratt Institute’s Jennifer Minniti, “Shop” provides an antidote to the banality of mass-produced fast-fashion, offering a range of limited-edition — and unique — paintings, sculptures and clothing from nine artists. Highlights include Libby Black’s cheeky paintings of designer logos, including a pair of Vans sneakers covered in skull-and-bones; Shelia Pepe’s web-like, crochéd sculptures; and Caroll Taveras’ fantastical collagist landscapes, which are breathtaking.
The party runs from 6:30 to 8:30 at 238 West 14th Street. There will be rum! And if last year’s exhibition is any indication, it should be really rad.
