Japan opened its doors to the West in the mid-1800s, and Europeans immediately went gaga for silk kimonos and fans. Indeed, by the late 19th century, no self-respecting, cosmopolitan woman would have gone out without an Eastern-inspired fan, such as this opera-goer in this 1879 painting by Mary Cassatt.
(Also, Cassatt was born in Pittsburgh. Holla!)
Born in Pittsburgh on this day in 1844, Mary Cassatt was raised in Philadelphia and even studied with our friends at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She also studied extensively in Europe and kept company with the Impressionists - counting Edgar Degas among her mentors.
